The “Modern Muse Series” featuring the work of photographer Redeat “Red” Wondemu (@itslikered8). Muses have usually been depicted by famous European artists. For generations, male artists have been the ones to tell society the meaning of a “Muse”, however, this series explores an unconventional standard of beauty. Red traveled to her home country of Ethiopia to work on this series. Wondemu’s photography depicts honesty, emotions, and vulnerability of the sitters she portrays. She spent hours at a time talking to them and getting to know their values, as they shared personal stories about their backgrounds, and how they navigate this world being a woman. “Using an analog film camera to photograph my muses and printing my large-scale gelatin silver prints in the darkroom is a way to express my artistic process and bring value to my sitters. This time-consuming process is important to me because it allows me to show how valuable and important the women I photograph are”, says Wondemu. Please be advised, this exhibition contains some mature images. Patrons are preferred to be 18 or older.
