Lisa D. Cain, a native of Canton, Mississippi grew up in a small country town and church. Her community and grandmother, Mrs. Louvenia Torrence, who picked cotton most of her life had a great influence on her development as an individual. Her grandmother did not buy her materialistic items such as toys or clothing but the values that she instilled in her and the time that she gave to her was the greatest gift that a child could receive. She remembers picking cotton with her grandmother, quilting, walking to the country store, and listening to her grandmother tell her stories about her childhood. Lisa remembers working in the garden, picking plums and gathering chicken eggs.

"From her I inherited so much wealth, the type of wealth that is immortal. I have transferred the memories of my childhood and my love for rural life and spirituality onto canvas". Lisa paints scenes depicting Southern life. She enjoys painting church scenes, farm life, baptismal paintings and scenes depicting grandmothers and grandfathers in a positive role. Through her paintings, she tries to express the energy and joy of a people who were bonded to nature and to each other. She hopes that her paintings can remind individuals of those days in which the simple pleasures of life were important and cherished. Her art is also an avenue for her to touch the hearts of others and to tell them about the blessings of God.

She is a folk artist who has incorporated her traditional folk art into a collage mixed media format. Her mixed media collage paintings invite one to think deeply and to reflect. Her art has represented by several galleries and is been purchased by art collectors throughout the United States. Her work is being featured in Denzel Washington’s new movie, and her work has been featured on Sherri Shepherd and John Lithgow’s pilot show “The Trail”.
